Buying a horsebox

What to know before you buy.

A horsebox carries something you love. That's not a marketing line - it's the reason every horsebox we sell is specified properly: rubber-matted ramps, padded partitions, breast and breach bars rated for the weight, and ventilation that actually works on a hot day. Every Cheval Liberté horsebox is backed by a two-year manufacturer warranty, with a five-year warranty on the aluminium sides and floors.

What to look for

  • Galvanised chassis throughout (not just the main rails)
  • Padded breast bar, breach bar and partition with quick release
  • Ventilation - roof vents and front ventilation panel
  • Anti-slip rubber matting on ramp and floor with proper drainage
  • Modern lighting harness, reverse light and internal interior light

  • What is the difference between a 2-horse and 3-horse trailer?
A 2-horse trailer carries two horses side-by-side with a centre partition. A 3-horse trailer is longer with a removable partition for an extra horse - typically used by yards and competition riders. Most private owners are best served by a quality 2-horse trailer.
  • Do I need a special licence to tow a horsebox?
Most modern 2-horse trailers are plated under 3,500kg gross combined weight, which means a category B licence (post-1997) is sufficient. Always check the trailer plate plus your towing vehicle's combined weight before you tow.
  • How long do horseboxes last?
A well-built horsebox with a galvanised chassis, properly looked after, will outlast most cars. Floor and matting are the wear items - check them annually. Our horseboxes carry a two-year manufacturer warranty, with a five-year warranty on the aluminium sides and floors.
  • Are your horseboxes safe for nervous loaders?
We focus on horseboxes with full-width front ramps or wide rear ramps, light interiors, padded partitions and proper ventilation - the things that genuinely help a horse load and travel calmly. Tell us about your horse and we will recommend accordingly.
  • Can I see the horsebox before I buy?
Yes - by appointment. We are based in the Midlands and you are welcome to come and walk around any horsebox we have available, with no pressure to buy.
